The Pastel de Nata was invented in the 18th century by monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Santa Maria de Belem. Today the monastery is a major tourist attraction. At the time, it was common practice to use egg whites to starch nuns’ clothes, leaving the monks with leftover yolks. To use these yolks up, they began baking delicious custard tarts. This recipe was then sold to the owners of the Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém. Today, Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém is located close to the Monastery.
Although the Pastel de Nata may be native to Portugal, they're now found and enjoyed all over the world.
The Pastel de Nata is a cross between a custard tart and a cake. The exterior is made from crispy, flaky pastry, whilst the inside is a creamy custard. Once baked, the tart is caramelised on top and ready to eat. Our advice is to eat them fresh from the oven, best enjoyed with an expresso at any of the wonderful coffee shops throughout the Algarve.
