December is the month to exhibit the “presépios”, a symbolic religious tradition that celebrates the birth of Jesus. In addition to the Sacred Family, the nativity Scene includes the Magi, the manger and the animals. However, the popular desire kept adding hundreds of other figures including millers, shepherds, blacksmiths, among others.
The traditional Nativity Scene in the Algarve has medieval origins and is set on a tree trunk or staircase, with the baby Jesus standing. In the wealthy houses, the steps are covered with lacy linen towels and hand embroidered, imitating the church's main altar. They are decorated with “searinhas” (wheat, corn or rye seeds), oranges and dried fruits, among other products of the land, to be blessed and bring future abundance.
The tradition of displaying “presépios” is very much alive in the Algarve region, evident by the various initiatives existing in the Christmas season. In 2020, we can highlight the exhibition “O Imaginário de Joaquim Pargana” at the João Bailote Municipal Gallery in Albufeira and one of the biggest Nativity Scenes in Portugal, on display in Vila Real de Santo António, composed of more than 5600 figures, including more than 80 animated and motorized pieces, four lakes and scenic lighting, spread over 230m2.
