Old fishermen village and one of the most scenic spots in the Algarve, Carvoeiro and the surrounding area is the ideal place for those looking for a peaceful living style, with a stunning environment of high beauty and the opportunity to enjoy the proximity of the sea.
Privileged and central location in the Algarve, here we can find the most beautiful beaches in the region and some of its best kept secrets. Discover here the ones that you cannot miss:
1. Algar Seco
Algar Seco is one of the main tourist attractions for those visiting Carvoeiro. East of that fishing village, Algar Seco consists of a set of fascinating rock formations, such as caves, natural pools and holes that look like windows overlooking the sea, created by the winds and sea water over several thousand years.
2. Marinha Beach
Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, Marinha Beach is sheltered by impressive limestone cliffs, offering stunning rock formations, such as caves and arches over the sea.
On the other hand, its crystalline waters showing the seabed allows the underwater observation of a diversity of marine habitats, standing out sea urchins, anemones, seabreams, octopus and cuttlefish.
3. Alfanzina Lighthouse
Built in 1920 on a rocky promontory overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Alfanzina Lighthouse had the mission of guiding ships along the coast, and meanwhile also helped fishermen who used to caught squids at night time.
Today, a visit to this 23-meter high tower allows you to appreciate the stunning surrounding landscape and see the several seabirds that inhabit the cliffs falling over the sea.
4. The walkways
Feel compelled to take a walk along the “Seven hanging valleys” route, on the walkways on the cliffs around the Carvoeiro village.
Enjoy unique and intoxicating views over the Atlantic Ocean and some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Observe the seabirds and Mediterranean vegetation, while admiring the imposing and fascinating cliffs, which form a lacy composition along the coastline.
5. Algar de Benagil
Is the largest cave in the Algar Seco complex, but it deserves a special mention. Located close to the village and beach with the same name, the emblematic Benagil cave consists of a large cave excavated by rain and sea water, with a small beach hidden inside. The circular opening in the ceiling, the “eye”, allows the entry of light, which is magically reflected on its walls and in the waters of the sea. Unmissable!
