Algarvian Chimneys

The Portuguese word for Algarvian Chimneys is Chaminé Algarvia. The origin of these chimneys dates back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. 

Craftsmen made these chimneys and the more ornate the design, the more costly the chimney, which would show your wealth status of the house owner.

Today, the value of the chimney is no longer relevant, but this work of art can be admired everywhere in the Algarve. More so, in the historical centres of villages and towns.

These chimneys reflect the Moorish influence: Five centuries of Arab domination have left their traces in the architectural style.

Nowadays the chimneys are primarily for decoration rather than use. Often you see more than one chimney on a roof of which only one is being used.
