Comfortable living in the ‘Rivierenbuurt’
The popular Rivieren neighbourhood has many houses built in the Amsterdam School architectural style and quiet tree-lined streets and avenues. The area offers great shopping, excellent restaurants, and cafés around the Europaplein, the Maasstraat, and the Scheldestraat. For sports and relaxation, the Martin Luther Kingpark (with the annual Parade Festival) and the Beatrixpark are around the corner, and there are several gyms and sports facilities on the Europaplein. The Rivieren neighbourhood has a favourable position to the main access roads (A10 ring road) and lots of public transport options like train station Amsterdam Rai and the North/South metro line. The Berlage bridge connects the neighbourhood with the Weesperzijde, which ensures a perfect connection to the rest of the city. The bridge was one of the main access points for our liberators at the end of WW 2 in 1945.
A bit of history
The Amsterdam Rivieren neighbourhood was developed in the 1920s and 1930 and it became a separate borough in 1987. Since then, it merged with other areas several times and, as of 1 May 2010, it is now part of the borough Zuid. When it was built in the 1920s, the urban developers mainly focused on the middle classes. Housing companies built 1736 smaller houses in total. Piet Kramer and Michel de Klerk are two famous architects who helped design the area. One of the buildings the area is particularly proud of is the ‘12-floor building’, also called the 'skyscraper of J.F. Staal’. The neighbourhood also has a rich Jewish history. In 1940, around 40 percent of all the Amsterdam Jews were living in this area.
Residents, public transport and greenery
The neighbourhood has over 65,000 residents, who are predominantly single households, which is why the neighbourhood mainly focuses on those with middle incomes. As the neighbourhood has lots of local amenities, the area is also popular with international buyers or tenants and expats looking for housing. Apart from the recently opened North/South metro line, there are tram and bus lines that connect the neighbourhood with the rest of the city so there is no shortage of public transport options. The availability of plenty of water and greenery are further reasons why this neighbourhood is an appealing area to buy or rent a house or an apartment, for both locals and people from outside of Amsterdam.
