Oud-West borders directly onto the centre of Amsterdam and is popular with people from all walks of life. There is so much happening here that people keep coming back to this area. This neighbourhood lies between the Singelgracht, the magnificent Vondelpark, the Kostverlorenvaart, and the Huge de Grootgracht. It was a separate borough from 1991 to 2000, but since 1 Mary 2010, it is now part of the new borough West.

Small and cosy

Oud-West is a small and sociable neighbourhood, and home to around 177 nationalities. This part of Amsterdam was developed in the late 19th century and the housing in this area mostly consists of apartments. Amsterdam-West has approximately 143,000 residents in total, of which the age group from 25 to 45 forms the majority. Around 60% of the people here are single households, which makes the neighbourhood also a popular area amongst expats and international tenants and buyers.

Urban area for bon vivants

This Amsterdam neighbourhood has a huge range of shops and restaurants, as well as many boutiques and, most of all, coffee places. People in this area have turned drinking coffee into a real form of art. The most vibrant location would be foody and cultural hotspot De Hallen; eating and having a good time are typical of this area. Amsterdam-West is an area where bon vivants will enjoy themselves to the max. The area is bursting with creativity and it is a great place to live. The daily Ten Katemarkt, just off the Kinkerstraat, is where you can get your vegetables, fruits, wine, cheese, flowers, and everything else you need.

Public transport and greenery

Public transport in Amsterdam is very well organised and this also applies to Oud-West. You will need to pay for on-street parking so, when you visit this area or many others in Amsterdam, it is more practical and cheaper to park your car at one of the P+R carparks and take public transport to wherever you want to go. Or, even more convenient, go by bike. There are several parking garages as well. The Vondelpark is perfect for a walk, cycling tour, or for doing sports like running. In short, this Amsterdam neighbourhood has all the ingredients for hard-working people, but also for a fun day out.
