The most beautiful churches in Venice

For the architecture or for the pictorial masterpieces inside, for the bell tower or for the sundials: here are the Venetian churches that you cannot miss

Drawing up a list of the most beautiful churches in Venice is a real undertaking: it is not easy to choose among the approximately one hundred and fifty splendid religious buildings that you can find in each district.

The experts of the Engel & Völkers agency, who know every corner of the city, have come up with an ideal list with the ten most beautiful churches. Are you curious to discover them?

Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari - San Polo

For Venetians simply the Frari, it is the largest church in the city. A splendid example of Gothic architecture, it preserves the remains of the great and two masterpieces of art, namely the Tomb of Canova and the Assumption of Titian. Also admire the great choir in front of the main altar: one of the few remaining examples in Italy.

Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore - Basin of San Marco

It is the masterpiece of Palladio, who also built the splendid refectory here that once housed Veronese's Wedding at Cana. Visit it at sunset that uniquely colors both the San Marco Basin and the nearby Salute Venice church for a photo that represents the most beautiful postcard of the city.

Church of San Rocco - San Polo

You say San Rocco and think of Tintoretto, because the great Venetian painter left the most important testimonies of him here and in the connected Scuola Grande. Probably, among the churches of Venice it is the most beautiful in terms of pictorial decorations.

Church of San Giobbe - Cannaregio

Austere and simple, it won us over for that atmosphere of devotion and spirituality that can be breathed in every corner and especially in the splendid cloister that once represented the initial part of an ancient botanical garden.

Church of Santo Stefano - San Marco

We have included it in this ideal list of the most beautiful churches in Venice because of the majestic leaning bell tower, the sixteenth-century cloister and a particularity that distinguishes it: the canal that passes under the apse and which can only be navigated with the low tide. The name? Rio del Santissimo, of course.

Church of San Polo - San Polo

The building that gives the sestiere its name can boast in its curriculum the l'Ultima Cena e  l'Assunta and Santi by Jacopo Tintoretto, the Sposalizio della Vergine by Paolo Veronese and La Vergine appare a San Giovanni Nepomuceno by Giambattista Tiepolo. However, even the oratory, with its Via Crucis, is waiting to be discovered.

Church of San Giacomo di Rialto - San Polo

It is considered  the oldest and smallest church in Venice. It is a few steps from the Rialto bridge and is linked to the birth of the market which here boasts over a thousand years of history. Its peculiarities include the sundial that stands out on the facade and overlooks the wooden portico dating back to the sixteenth century.

Church of San Sebastiano - Dorsoduro

This sixteenth-century building, built in the name of sobriety, holds a real treasure: a cycle of paintings by Paolo Veronese who decorated most of the interiors. The Vita di Ester and the Martirio di San Sebastiano are the masterpieces of the artist who was also buried here.

Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli - Cannaregio

Enter this church and immediately turn your gaze upwards. The wooden coffered ceiling with small panels depicting a patriarch or a prophet is a real spectacle as well as the polychrome marbles worked by Pietro Lombardo.

Basilica of San Pietro di Castello - Castle

A corner of Venice that few know and it is a fortune. Because walking in the grass field in front of the main facade is good for the eyes and the heart.
