Since 1999 (the year of its birth) until today, kitesurfing has become one of the most popular and practised water sports and has now gained popularity all over the world.
In Italy there are several spots even for beginners, and Sicily, thanks to its geographic position, conformation and climate is certainly a location that is very suitable for sea and outdoor sports. The experts and most enthusiasts in the field believe that Sicily is the most suitable place, especially for beginners, to safely practice this activity.
In this article, we want to tell you about the 'Laguna dello Stagnone', the most suggestive and windy lagoon in the whole of Europe, located on the western Sicilian coast. It is a natural reserve just a few kilometres from the centre of Marsala, in the province of Trapani, with white sandy beaches and a sea of clear, calm waters and shallow depths in almost all its parts.
The Lagoon is an extraordinarily beautiful spot where kitesurfing can be practised almost all year round, thanks to the mild climate. It is considered one of the best spots in Sicily, a stretch of water of more than 2,000 hectares enclosed between some small islands and the mainland.
The islands composing it are: Isola Lunga or Isola Grande, Isola di Santa Maria, Isola la Schola and, finally, in the centre, the suggestive and historically important island of Mozia; these islands, depending on the direction of the wind and thanks to the Venturi effect, channel the air and increase the intensity of the wind.
This naturalistic area is particularly appreciated by enthusiasts with its sunny and windy beaches (predominantly Sirocco and Mistral winds) for much of the year, which give it an international reputation, also due to its breathtaking views, particularly at sunset in summer and winter.
It is no coincidence that there are numerous schools here that organise kite courses for all levels, as well as windsurfing, and equipped centres that rent (in addition to kite equipment) SUP boards, canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats.
It is also a very convenient location to reach as it is very close to Trapani-Birgi airport, which is well connected to many Italian airports, even by low-cost airlines, or, alternatively, it is possible to fly to Palermo airport, which is about an hour from Marsala.
Those who do not want to give up the comfort of taking their car and all their equipment with them can opt for a trip by sea, given the many ferries that connect the peninsula to Sicily with departures from Naples, Rome, and Livorno.
