The Brunello di Montalcino is a DOCG red wine produced in the municipality of Montalcino in the province of Siena. Together with the Barolo, the Brunello di Montalcino is referred to as one of the Italian red wines with a higer longevity.
Characteristics of the Brunello
The best wines are those that are still produced according to the ancient traditions, respecting both the characteristics of the Sangiovese grape and the microclimate of Montalcino. The warmth of the Maremma and the majestic mountain Amiata in the South offer the ideal conditions for wine growing in the Montalcino area. The recipe for the perfect wine is very simple: low yield per vine, harvest of the best grapes, perfect maturation and therefore a long, sweet finish.
The Brunello di Montalcino is a wine for those who can wait: it takes years to develop all its potential. The tannins and acid must be refined, rounded and mixed to create a magical blend of fragrances that are becoming increasingly ethereal. In recent years, many manufacturers have experimented with Brunelli, that are less tannic and marketable, which adversely affects its aging potential and complexity.
How to serve the Brunello di Montalcino
We are speaking of a precious wine that deserves a place of honor in your cellar. The bottle must rest horizontally for at least a few weeks before opening to avoid trauma. The decantation can only be done in two cases: if there is a sediment or if it is a relatively young Brunello that is at most 10-15 years old. For Brunelli over 20 years, it is not advisable to decant the bottle, as the bouquet may be affected and the sudden oxygenation would lead to a collapse of the fragile balance of the wine. Serve the wine in large glasses and let it breathe in the glass. The serving temperature corresponds to the classic one of structured red wines, namely 18-20 ° C.
As a meal to the Brunello di Montalcino you could offer rich dishes such as stews, game, baked lasagne, truffle risotto or pork.
