We have already talked about it when we mentioned the story of Porto Rafael and the 50 years of the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club: the birth of Porto Cervo dates back to the sixties, exactly in 1962. A very young prince, who at the time was only 22, fell in love with this part of the coast and decided to invest money and time to discover a land to live. Karim Aga Khan IV was enchanted by the beauty of Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo; He bought 3,000 hectares of uncultivated land and, with the help of architect Luigi Vietti and other professionals, began building what we now all know as Porto Cervo, a precious gem in Sardinia.
PortoVecchio – in English Old Port - was so called because in the 1980s began the building of what is today Porto Cervo Marina, a more equipped and larger part of the resort useful to host the international tourism that already in that time brought an important flow of tourists.
Porto Vecchio is still functioning, enchanting the first time visitor but even those who know it since a long time. Within walking distance from the Promenade du Port, it houses boats and sailboats and on summer is set up with stalls enriching the vintage atmosphere with lights and glamour.
Both marinas are the Sardinia’s holiday destination of the most powerful men in the world and where the most famous luxury yachts are docked and can be admired from late spring until late summer and, sometimes, even autumn.

Its name is Lady Moura and is one of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world.This jewel of the naval engineering belongs to the Saudi multi-billionaire Nasser Al-Rashid and boast 24k gold finishings.
Another of the world's most luxurious yachts belongs to Steven Spielberg. It's called Seven Seas, has a heliport, a gym, an indoor pool and, of course, a five-star movie theater.
Frequently spotted in the turquoise waters of Costa Smeralda, Dilbar is a glorious yacht with an overall length of 156 metres and it is considered to be the largest superyacht by volume. Its owner, the Russian magnate Alisher Usmanov, felt in love with Costa Smeralda and has bought a villa at Romazzino, and after that many more have followed.
Al Said, built by Lurssen Yachts in Bremen, is another super yacht that every summer drops its anchor off at Porto Vecchio. It’s owned by the Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman and with its huge dimension can offer accommodation up to 70 guests. Last but not least, Eclipse, the second most expensive yacht in the world. It is 528 feet long, has 24 guest rooms and a submarine. Its owner is the Russian businessman Roman Abramovich.
