It is a very special year for the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club: this year the YCCS celebrates its first 50th anniversary, a long period that marked the history of Porto Cervo and enriched it with art, culture and passion for the sea.
"New partners and new commitments will accompany us in the celebrations of the Club's 50th anniversary. A goal that speaks of history, values and innovative forces that have made in the past and will make in future the Yacht Club a keystone in the international yachting landscape."
With these words, the commodore of the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, Riccardo Bonadeo, expresses all its happiness for the celebration of the 50 years of foundation.
"It seems just yesterday: I still clearly see in my mind the images of when the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was born. It was 1967 and the bay of Porto Cervo - so it was already called in the toponymy of the official nautical charts - began to attract the lovers of such incredible bay and its sea, which I consider one of the most spectacular in the Mediterranean. Back then, we were a few pioneers, pure dreamers... ".
Prince Aga Khan's words are so romantic and enlighten an indissoluble love for Sardinia: the result is Porto Cervo, a precious jewel in the world of sailing.
The elite members that chose the magic of Porto Cervo want fully live this charming place, knowing very well the thousand reasons why one should also consider to buy a villa in Costa Smeralda.
This summer the agenda is full of appointments that will give even more shine to the sailing excellence of the coast. On the founding date anniversary, a photo exhibition was inaugurated, which will lead to the publication of a book: it will be called Flying the Burgee and will tell the story of the Club and of all the yachts that in the 50 years brought its pennon.
The book is just the icing on the cake of this anniversary.
Twenty regattas, which have already started in the past months and will continue until November with a stop on the Atlantic waves. In fact, regattas will be held between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic to homage both our land and the Caribbean branch, at Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands.
That’s not all: the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has worked with Sda Bocconi in the Sustainability Lab project to create "One Ocean": an international forum scheduled for late September in Sardinia where many environmental sustainability topics will be discussed. The special patroness of the event will be Princess Zahra Aga Khan, chairman of the board of directors of the Yacht Club.
Everything's been taken care of to celebrate 50 years with the wind blowing always at its back, proceeding with open sails to a special route, full of satisfaction to reach!
