Imagine a picturesque village dotted with colourful houses, which in fine weather turns into an enchanting garden where you can stroll amidst the scent of camellias and the blossoms of citrus trees. Imagine then that the village in question is one of the most beautiful villages on Lake Maggiore and a tourist resort waiting to be discovered. Without having to go too far, in your search for this dream location, you might come across the beauty of Cannero Riviera, a real gem on the Piedmont shore of the lake, just a few steps from Switzerland, halfway between the water and green mountains.
In short, an interesting destination to visit and, why not, an ideal place to buy a house. Discover Cannero Riviera and what to see in this delightful village, with advice from the Engel & Völkers Lago Maggiore Agency.
A true pearl in the province of Verbania-Cusio-Ossola, the Cannero Riviera beach has once again won the coveted Italian Blue Flag award for 2022. Although small, the beach in question boasts clean water and all kinds of services and amenities. But what makes the difference is undoubtedly the landscape, thanks to the enchanting setting of the lake and the proximity of the splendid Citrus Park. Cannero's old port, a small stone pier where fishermen's boats used to dock in the past and which offers a panoramic view of the lake and the Castles, is also very picturesque and not to be missed.
Although it is a small village of just under 1,000 inhabitants, houses for sale in Cannero Riviera are among the most sought-after at the moment. If today it is one of the most popular resorts on Lake Maggiore, it is thanks to the many local beauties, including its picturesque historic centre, animated by restaurants, small shops and small attractions that are surprising in their uniqueness. This is the case of the Church of San Giorgio, which stands in the main square, and the Church of San Rocco located in the newer part of the town. Among the things to see in Cannero Riviera, don't forget a visit to what is known as the Piazzetta degli Affreschi, where you can admire four historical frescoes depicting moments of the town's history.
Just in front of the town beach you can admire the famous Castles of Cannero.
These are three rocky islets where fortifications still stand, originally built between the 11th and 12th centuries and known as Malpaga. Around 1404, they were taken over by the five Mazzardi brothers, known as Mazzarditi, who terrorised ships and villages from these islets by robbing and committing acts of piracy. According to local legend, even today the ghost galleon of the Mazzarditi pirates ploughs the waters of Cannero in search of the ancient treasure that ended up in the sea after the siege of 1414. Currently unvisitable due to their poor condition, they represent one of the most striking attractions of Cannero Riviera.
When talking about Cannero Riviera and what to see when walking around the village, it is impossible not to mention the Citrus Park. In addition to being famous for housing so many varieties of citrus trees and ornamental plants from all over the world, it is appreciated for its particular terraced structure along the Cannero lido. Unique varieties of oranges, lemons and citrons find here the ideal place to grow due to a particularly favourable microclimate, thanks to the mountains that shield the cold currents and the lake that mitigates the winters. Not to be missed is the well-known Citrus Festival that usually takes place in March and attracts tourists and visitors every year with its colours, scents and traditions.
