Gattinara is located in a unique geographic area: it’s not far from both Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta and at the same time it’s convenient to reach the Alps and Monte Rosa, as well as Malpensa airport and Milan.
A land immersed in the tranquillity of the countryside, at the same time near some of the most important towns and natural areas of Northern Italy. These are just some of the characteristics making this territory so extraordinary. Gattinara is also famous for its wine. Gattinara wine comes from a great tradition, such as that of Barolo and Barbaresco, two other famous types of Piedmontese wine.
But what do they have in common? They share the same grapes, that is Nebbiolo, the main vine variety in Piedmont. Gattinara has been known since Roman times and owes its fame to an illustrious figure who lived between 1440 and 1500: cardinal Mercurio Arborio. He was councillor at the courts of Savoia, Asburgo, Spain and that of the Emperor Charles V, where it is said he used the wine of Gattinara as a weapon of persuasion.
Stepping forward in time, Gattinara has been one of the first to adhere to the new DOC (controlled designation of origin) legislation in the ‘70s and then also to the DOCG (label guaranteeing the quality and origin of a wine) in the ‘90s, that way stating its role as one of the Italian best wines.
Immersed in the countryside of Gattinara, this wonderful estate comes from an old farmhouse that has been finely renovated. The land all around is about four hectares and hosts wonderful fruit and ornamental trees. The main building has kept the original architectural elements and has a wide mezzanine open space of about 200 sqm. This area overlooks a panoramic terrace and hosts an office and a turret with bedroom and bathroom.
In the main building you can also find an apartment of about 90 sqm with independent entrance. The estate also offers a wonderful dépendance in rustic style with exposed beams and wrought iron window fixtures. From the porch you can admire the thicket and the natural small lake. A real heaven of peace in the quiet village of Barengo, north of Novara.
Gattinara is classic and elegant. Just like this villa dating back to the ‘30s, located in the same area. A perfect property for those looking for a valued and refined home, where time seems to have stopped. Among the characteristics of this villa, the coloured glass, the panelled ceilings and the parquet flooring stand out. Every element contributes to an atmosphere of refined antiquity.
The property develops on two levels and is topped by a characteristic bright turret, which lends itself to be used as an office or a hobby area. The park surrounding the villa has a surface of about 5,000 sqm and hosts the caretaker’s house, a small cottage and even a pond.
Those who love Gattinara wine and its territory will be fascinated by this villa, halfway between Turin and Milan. It’s also not far from Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, so if you are looking for places to visit in the area, the hills of Nebbiolo are just around the corner.
Before we conclude, here’s another fun fact about Gattinara. The great winemaking tradition of the area has led one of the major producers of Gattinara - Travaglini - to patent a type of design bottle since 1958, with a particular shape, which allows direct pouring into the glass while retaining any sediment. A gem for enthusiasts, to be taken into consideration if you are looking for a vintage bottle.
