The setting is that of a painting done to perfection, with a landscape that even the tormented philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche fall in love with. We are talking about Orta San Giulio and the beauties that surround this village and the Lake, an enchanted place, known all over the world.
From the spectacle of the lake panorama to the magic of the narrow streets made of pebbles and colorful buildings, this little pearl on Lago d'Orta offers many wonders to be discovered. Which? Take note of what to see in Orta San Giulio thanks to the advice of your Engel & Völkers Lago Maggiore agency.
When reviewing what to see in Orta San Giulio, a special mention goes to the enchanting Villa Bossi, the current seat of the town hall and the heart of the city. The true beauty of this majestic building from the second half of the 1700s is its enviable terrace overlooking the lake, whose panorama has conquered the German painter Carl Heinz Schroth.
Proof of this is the well-known sculpture entitled "The perfect picture" which pays homage to the artist. Its splendid gardens are open to the public and can be visited, as well as enjoying the glimpse of the lake.
Among the things to see in Orta San Giulio, therse is the homonymous island. Also renamed "the island of silence", this little gem surrounded by the waters of the lake offers unique feelings not only for the amenity of the landscape, but also for the atmosphere you breathe.
Its origins, in fact, are confused with the legend that the island was freed from snakes by the saint whose name it bears. Currently, the island of San Giulio is inhabited only by very few families and the Benedictine nuns of the Mater Ecclesiae Abbey, an absolutely must-see attraction along with the Basilica of San Giulio.
Do not forget also the famous path of silence, a walk dedicated to meditation, where you can admire beautiful buildings, lush gardens and breathtaking scenery.
Located in a dominant position with respect to the splendid setting of Lago dìOrta, this place is home to a Nature Reserve that will allow you to live an experience in the name of nature, with panoramic paths that wind through lush woods and as many as 20 dedicated chapels to the life of St. Francis of Assisi. Also worth visiting along the way is the Church of San Nicolao, reproduced in the style of the basilica of Assisi.
When it comes to deciding what to see in Orta San Giulio, it is almost impossible to forget a visit to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Built in 1485, it can be reached by climbing to the top of Salita della Motta, a stone and pebble road that will allow you to admire beautiful period buildings and enjoy the panorama that sweeps from the ancient village of Orta to the island of San Giulio, framed by the Alpine peaks.
The church houses 17th and 18th century paintings by the Rossetti, Cantalupi and Orgiazzi. Also noteworthy is Procaccini's work which depicts San Carlo Borromeo in Milan during the plague epidemic of the 17th century, a true treasure of Lombard painting of the time.
