As well as being the capital of the historical region of Friuli, the city of Udine has been a key player in the economic and cultural life of north-east Italy for centuries.
The city’s beauty can be seen in its ancient palaces and Venetian piazzas. For example, the piazza Libertà has been called ‘the most beautiful Venetian piazza on earth’ and the piazza Matteotti resembles an open-air salon with its grand porticos, indicating just how much richness and wonder this Friulian capital has to offer.
Another key landmark is undoubtedly the castle, from which you have a stunning view over the city and the surrounding mountains. From an artistic point of view, during the eighteenth century Udine was the city in which Giambattista Tiepolo reachedthe pinnacle of his career. His masterpieces are exhibited in various locations around the city, for example in the Tiepolo Galleries, the Duomo and the chiesa della Purità.
Udine ranks highest for average taxable income amongst the four regional capitals of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and indeed in the region of Trieste.
Economic activity in Udine is mostly linked to its administrative function as the seat of local government for the region with responsibility for schools, banks and universities. Trade also plays a key role in the economy of Udine and has become increasingly more important, negatively impacting the industrial sector.
The property sector is one of the important sectors in the economy of Udine.
The market for luxury properties is flourishing due to the fact that the city contains many historical palaces and amazing mansions.
However, it’s interesting to note that even looking at the market as a whole (not only focussing on premium properties), the figures are extremely positive. For example, the Agenzia delle Entrate registered as many as 1315 transactions in Udine alone during 2017.
It’s not difficult to see why Udine is increasingly becoming the centre of property initiatives and investments in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
