Verdicchio is the most popular berry in the Marche region. There are, in fact, 3,500 hectares of vineyards used for the production of the iconic white wine of the whole regional viniculture.
Matelica and the Castles of Jesi
Verdicchio of Jesi and Verdicchio of Matelica are the main denominations. However, although they belong to the same cultivar there are some differences, influenced by the different microclimate. Verdicchio di Jesi is marked by the iodized influences of the Adriatic sea due to a marine and windy climate, while Matelica is nestled among the first offshoots of the Apennines, therefore wine here is slighter due to the heavier soils made of clay.
A flexible vineyard
The Verdicchio vineyard is very flexible: during the ripening periods the Classic Method sparkling wines and passito wines are produced, bringing to the production of several grape varieties, such as many minerally wines or thicker ones.
Organoleptic properties: Verdicchio has a lot of substabce and a strong pleasant flavour due to the continental microclimate. In particular, vineyards of the Verdicchio di Patelica are cultivated on calcareous soil, giving it more finesse and olfactory evaluation. The name Vedicchio derives from the Italian verde ("green") and refers to the slight green/yellow hue.It is dry, little persistent to taste and has flavours that might remind you to ripe fruit. The mouthfeel is fine, warm with a long and slightly almond aftertaste.
Food pairings: fish course in all its forms, white meats, rice with vegetables but also with prawns or risottos.
How to serve it: 8 to 10 degrees in mid-sized glasses.
