Today, we talk about an ancient, difficult but fascinating profession: the “buttero”.
The word “buttero” comes from the Greek “bùteros” as well as from the Latin “boum-ductor”. It means “someone who leads oxen”. This role has become one of the symbols of Tuscany Maremma in the world.
The Tuscany Maremma cowboys are well-known as the best tamers of wild horses in Italy. It is said that in 1890, they won a competition beating the great American cowboys of the famous Buffalo Bill team.
The buttero is the herdsman, the one who takes care of the cattle - such as Maremma cows with lyre horns, oxen, horses, bulls in the wild - in every phase of his life.
Day and night on his Maremma breed horse, the buttero accompanies and protects the animals. He leads a simple life made of hard work and love for nature. A poor life, but glorious enough to become a legend.
Typical clothing includes moleskin trousers and jackets, wide-brimmed hats, flannel shirts, goat or boar leather leg loops, cowhide boots and a long hook. Apart from the master, the buttero is the only one who can ride.
Buttero’s expertise has been fundamental for centuries, but the new agricultural techniques and the disappearance of farming in the wild are turning a job into a myth, despite the fact that in some areas it is still practised.
Yet this heartfelt tradition is experiencing a new life thanks to sporting competition and sustainable tourism.
In fact, today's butteri associations continue to share incredible stories of the past, especially during traditional festivals. In addition, in summer they entertain both Italian and foreign tourists. Enthusiastic audiences attend the “Marca” of cattle, the balance games on horseback and the incredible choreography, indeed. These shows offer moments of suspense and emotion for both adults and children.
For a complete Tuscany Maremma experience, don't miss butteri show the next time you spend your holidays in the province of Grosseto!
