If Italy is the leading wine producer in the world, Tuscany is one of the regions that contribute most to achieving the primacy.
Among the most famous Tuscan denominations (Chianti, Bolgheri) the Maremma Toscana DOC appellation is gaining ground. Born in 2011, this includes the whole territory of the province of Grosseto. In 2019, this appellation became the third-largest in the region. In fact, it registered 314 members. The Vermentino accounts for 28% of total production.
Indeed, Tuscany Maremma is the perfect land to host high-quality vineyards. Thanks to a hilly area, a warm and dry climate, as well as the proximity of the sea, its wines have a characteristic Mediterranean profile.
The main varieties cultivated in the province of Grosseto are: Sangiovese, Vermentino, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Trebbiano toscano, Syrah, Ciliegiolo, Cabernet franc, Petit verdot, Ansonica, Chardonnay, Alicante, Viogner, Pinot grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Alicante bouschet, Colorino and Pugnitello.
Let's find out more!
It is said that the name of the most famous Tuscany Maremma wine in the world comes from “Morelli”. Indeed, Morelli horses were used to pull the chariots of officers travelling to Scansano.
Recognized as DOC in 1978 and became DOCG in 2007, Morellino di Scansano is born from the local variety of Sangiovese grapes. This wine is produced in the municipalities of Scansano, Campagnatico, Manciano, Magliano in Toscana, Semproniano and Roccalbegna. The flavour is fresh and intense. It is perfect to accompany the tasty dishes of local cuisine.
Born in the characteristic tuff area of Pitigliano, the homonymous DOC wine is the result of a complex combination of different grapes: Trebbiano Toscano "Procanico" (50-80%), Greco, Malvasia Bianca Toscana or Verdello (minimum 20%), Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco and Riesling Italico (maximum 30 %). The Bianco di Pitigliano is a dry wine with a straw yellow colour and a fresh and delicate flavour. You can taste it with simple dishes and appetizers.
The Sovana DOC denomination includes wines produced with the Sangiovese, Aleatico, Cabernet Sauvignon, local Ciliegiolo and Merlot varieties. The result is red and rosé wines including Superiore and Riserva typology. This wine takes its name from the characteristic Etruscan town of Sovana. It is produced among Pitigliano, Sorano and Manciano.
Montecucco Doc is produced between the municipalities of Cinigiano and Castel del Piano. It is a red wine. Montecucco is considered one of the greatest Italian DOC wines for taste and refinement. Derived mainly from Sangiovese, it has a ruby color and should be enjoyed with red meats or cheeses.
Capalbio DOC is produced in the famous area of Capalbio, as well as in Manciano, Magliano in Toscana and Orbetello. The Capalbio DOC label includes white, red and rosé wines: Vermentino, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Vin Santo.
The Ansionica is a dry, light wine with a fruity aroma and a straw yellow color. Recognized as DOC in 1995, this quality is made up of at least 85% of Ansonica and a maximum of 15% of other white varieties. It is produced in the exclusive Silver Coast area: Orbetello, Capalbio, Manciano and the Giglio and Elba Islands. It is perfect to be enjoyed with delicious fish dishes.
Parrina Doc is another well-known variety of white wine cultivated in the homonymous area near Orbetello.
