History and features of the typical Tuscan country-house

find out more on this typical house part of Tuscany landscape

Thinking about Tuscany, the first thing we imagine is a peaceful countryside surrounding a beautiful country-house.

Does Tuscan country-house have a history? Which are the main characteristics of this building?

The Tuscan country-house is one of the most interesting building typology. Indeed, it is the dream house of several buyers, both Italians and foreigners.

Let’s find out why!

A farmhouse became a charming country-house

In the 1500s, Tuscan nobles built farmhouses to host workers with their families.

The farmers had to cultivate lords’ land, take care of the cattle and carry out all the operations following the harvest. The properties usually consisted of a main house - where the nobleman used to overnight - and poor farm buildings, in addition to stables, farmyards and barns. Usually, the farmer's home was on the first floor, while on the ground floor there were stables and storehouses. Many other farmhouses were then built in the 1700s, because of the agrarian reforms wanted by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Since the 1900s, the urbanization has led many to leave the countryside to seek their fortune in the city. However, in recent decades, country-houses are experiencing a new golden age. In fact, many are rediscovering the pleasure of living in contact with nature, far from stressful cities. Someone wants to totally change life. Others want to invest turning farmhouses into B&Bs ready to welcome tourists from all over the world.
