Goya’s paintings recovered

“Portrait of Don Miguel Cayetano Sole” and “Iam tandem Italiae fugentes prendimus oras” are the masterpieces protagonist of this prestigious event. These paintings - recently attributed to Goya - will be exposed for the first time. The first portrait draws a famous Spanish politician, while “Iam tandem Italiae fugentes prendimus oras” illustrates the arrival of Enea on the Lazio coast, theme inspired by verse 61 of the VI book of Virgil’s Aeneid. This painting, in particular, is thought to have participated in the competition held on 1771 by the Academy of Fine Arts of Parma, obtaining great success.

In fact, these works have been realized between 1770 and 1771 during Goya’s stay in Italy. That year, he spent time with Roman artists and let himself be inspired among others by the Raphael and Bernini’s masterpieces.
