Discovering Tuscany Maremma (part 6)

Let's find out more on the heart of Southern Tuscany: Grosseto

Today, our tour of the amazing Tuscany Maremma reaches the main town: Grosseto. Indeed, in the past weeks we discovered the Metalliferous Hills, the Amiata Mountain, the Maremma countryside, the Silver Coast and Castiglione della Pescaia area, so it’s time to find out why Grosseto area worth a visit.

Grosseto is a quiet place near wonderful beaches. Its characteristic historic center is protected by a rare example of intact medieval walls. The “Cassero Senese” is one of the four bastions, as well as one of the most suggestive venues. It is often chosen as a setting for events, indeed. San Lorenzo cathedral and San Francesco church are among the most important monuments. If you wish to get to know Southern Tuscany, then you should visit both the Maremma Archaeological and Art Museum and the Maremma Natural History Museum.

Grosseto offers any type of service, including: railway station, hospital, two shopping malls and an airport for private flights. Here, VIPs and international entrepreneurs land, such as the Obama family, U2 leader Bono and Rolling Stone leader Mick Jagger. Indeed, from Grosseto you can easily reach exclusive seaside locations such as the Silver Coast or Castiglione della Pescaia, as well as the renowned Val d’Orcia, among others.

Grosseto is a perfect place for raising children in a people-friendly environment. Moreover, you can consider this town also for investing in a holiday home: beaches are just 10 minutes away! Furthermore, it is located 2 hours from Rome, going south, and 2 hours from Florence, going north.

Grosseto coast and its beautiful beaches

Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare are the closest seaside villages. They are characterized by long, wide sandy beaches awarded with the Blue Flag. Indeed, in summer they welcome families also from abroad. Here, you will find both beach clubs - even with swimming pool, and free beaches. In particular, Marina di Grosseto offers entertainment for children and teenagers, as well as delicious restaurants and shops. Furthermore, you can dock your boat or yacht in the beautiful tourist harbor.

The Maremma Natural Park is an oasis of over 9,000 square meters, from Principina a Mare to Talamone. In this magical place the Uccellina mountains meet the Tyrrhenian coast. Foxes, roe deer, wild boars, porcupines, horses and many other species populate it. The scents of the Mediterranean scrub will leave you an unforgettable memory. This unspoiled area can be visited on foot, on horseback, by bike or by canoe. In addition, special attention is paid to children activities. Marina d’Alberese is the most famous beach within the Park. After crossing the pine forest, probably after meting some horses, you will find yourself on a beautiful beach with a crystal clear sea.

Roselle Archaeological Park and the lovely villages near Grosseto

The ancient Roselle is a hamlet in the Northen side of Grosseto known for the importance of its Archaeological Park. In fact, thanks to excavations carried out since the 1900s, the Roman city re-emerged with ruins of thermal plants and city walls. Moreover, in summer, the beautiful Roman amphitheater hosts dramatic performances.

Istia d’Ombrone is a quiet village, located just 6 km from Grosseto. It rises near the Ombrone river. Istia is another fascinating place protected by medieval walls.

Nomadelfia is a famous Christian community founded by Don Zeno in the post-war. Guided by evangelical values, family members work just to support the community. Its 300 residents share everything - they own only the bare essentials - and are supported by an agricultural cooperative. The community can be visited with prior notice.

Batignano and Montepescali are two characteristic medieval villages perched on hills and surrounded by the Maremma countryside. They both host a castle and a beautiful old town with prestigious buildings. In particular, Montepescali is also known as the "terrace of Tuscan Maremma" because of its wonderful panoramic position overlooking the valley, as well as the coast.
