Discovering Tuscany Maremma (part 2)

Suggestive medieval villages in the shade of Amiata Mountain

After the wonderful Metalliferous Hills, our journey continues to Amiata Mountain and Fiora River area. Let’s discover other magical and secret villages of the province of Grosseto Maremma!

Amiata Mountain - Grosseto

Monte Amiata, an ancient volcano located between the Grosseto Maremma and the Val d’Orcia, is the highest peak in Southern Tuscany. This is a protected, magical area within woods and nature reserves. Amiata is the ideal location both in summer - to cool off and play sports in contact with nature - and in winter to enjoy winter sports.

The area of Fiora River is a luxuriant valley which also hosts rare species. The water course was born right under the floor of the Church “Madonna della Neve” in Santa Fiora, a village that takes its name from the river.

Arcidosso is one of the main villages of Amiata Mountain region. The majestic Rocca Aldobrandesca, the Church “Madonna delle Grazie” (where you can see important paints) and the medieval town fascinate all visitors. Nature lovers can’t miss a visit to Monte Labbro Nature Reserve. In Autumn, the main event is the Chestnut Festival: the typical fruit of Amiata, as well as other local gastronomy specialities such as the oil and the Montecucco wines are the "celebrities".

Castel del Piano is a so special place that deserved a dedication by Pope Pius II for "the beauty of the place, the convenience of the location and the amenity of the village". The historic center is enriched, among other things, by a beautiful 16th century loggia and the majestic Clock Tower. The Palio is a very important event loved both by local people and international tourists: it is a Medieval joust that celebrates the Madonna delle Grazie every 8 September.

Castell’Azzara is at the foot of Civitella Mountain, near woods. Its ancient narrow streets have a special story. In fact, it seems that the village was won by dice (“zara”) by Bonifacio degli Aldobrandeschi in the 13th-century.

Roccalbegna seems a village described in a novel of dragons and knights. In fact the village stands on a fortress placed on a cyclopean boulder. The Albegna Valley and the spectacular canyons of the WWF Oasis of Bosco Rocconi certainly worth a visit.

Seggiano, a delightful village not far from Montalcino, is well known for the cultivation of "Seggianese" olive and for the production of extra virgin olive oil with excellent organoleptic properties. The Valley of Olives, a panoramic road leading to Castello del Potentino, enchants every visitor. Indeed, many choose to invest in this area characterized by the high-quality of life.

Semproniano, a very suggestive village that stands around the ruins of the Aldobrandesco castle, and the Rocchette di Fazio are two real jewels in the province of Grosseto. Among the lovely medieval streets, we find wonderful little houses that host families from all over Europe escaped from chaotic and overcrowded big cities.

Santa Fiora is the soul of Tuscany Maremma. Because of its splendour, it is recognized as one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy". As small as magical, this perched village enjoys a wonderful view over the valley and the Fiora river. Its historic center is characterized by the remains of the Aldobrandesca domination, including the Castle and the Pieve. The main attraction is the Peschiera: a mirror of water guarded by Amiata Mountain and surrounded by beautiful chestnut, cypress and pine woods, where locals and tourists find peace and tranquillity.
