Engel & Völkers is currently brokering an exceptional property for rent on Greece’s Peloponnese peninsula that has been awarded the German Design Award 2021 for its outstanding architecture. Known as the “Rusted Mill House”, the property is a restored mill house dating back to the 1850s, with a traditional olive mill preserved inside. “The overall complex, made up of three buildings, is quite spectacular in appearance thanks to the balance of natural stone contrasting with the modern construction of steel and glass. Sleek straight lines sit harmoniously with the original architectural features, letting the heritage of the former farmhouse shine through,” says Georg Petras, CEO of Engel & Völkers in Greece.
As a holiday property, the house offers guests a luxurious stay in stylish and contemporary simplicity, thanks to the most modern furnishings and highest standards set over a total interior of 335 square metres. It is divided over two levels in different parts of the building and encompasses a beautifully preserved old mill area with high beamed ceilings, an open plan gourmet kitchen with a dining area, a living room with a fireplace, and three master bedrooms each with an en suite bathroom. Large window frontages and cleverly placed window inlets bring an elegant airiness to the former mill house. The interior design is also impressive for its minimalist aesthetic, which is combined with natural tones and materials. Another highlight is the panoramic terrace, which affords far-reaching views over the Peloponnese countryside as far as the Messinian Bay. The “Rusted Mill House” is located in the southwest of the peninsula, around a three-hour drive from Athens.
Every year, the German Design Award recognises innovative projects and products, along with their manufacturers and designers, that are shaping the design landscape of the future both in Germany and internationally. The jury honoured the “Rusted Mill House” with a “Special Mention” in the “Excellent Architecture” category: “The modern construction of Corten steel and glass forms an exciting contrast to the longstanding historic buildings, which are made of natural stone. On closer inspection, the large front window gives a view into the original architecture behind it, where old and new sit harmoniously alongside one another.” The building was designed by the Greek architectural firm DETALE Architecture & Engineering.
Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and is regarded as a relatively safe destination, even during the coronavirus pandemic. The Peloponnese peninsula to the south of the Greek mainland has a particularly fascinating heritage, and is considered the “cradle” of the first advanced civilisations to emerge in Europe. The region is home to a wealth of archaeological sites and ancient architectural treasures, including Sparta, Mycenae and Corinth. Its charm can be seen throughout the quaint little villages, surrounded by unspoilt countryside dotted with olive groves and orange tree plantations. The landscape is also varied, ranging from white sandy beaches to gently rolling hills. The mild year-round climate makes the peninsula an attractive destination in all seasons. The “Rusted Mill House” is available for rent here all year round.
