The Historic Seaside Town of Mazarrón

Mazarrón is a coastal municipality on the southeastern region of Spain located in the autonomous province of Murcia. This large cozy town has much to offer on land as it does in its abundant waters.

Mazarrón is embedded with rich history, as can be seen in the many ancient structures scattered throughout the town. One such example is the Torre de los Caballos, on Los Caballos peak, which was built around the mid-16th and completed in early 18th century, and served as protection against coastal raiding pirates. Another testament to the town’s deep-rooted history are the foothills of Sierra de la Almenara which have been mined since the Phoenician Era.

The municipality has been careful to preserve its many historical landmarks and sites, which have been converted into local attractions. Such sites include the Punta de los Gavilanes Site, which contains markings and remains dating back to Roman and even Pre-historic times, and the Alamillo Villa, which is an archaeological site consisting of the remains of a villa, aqueduct, and pond, which all date back to the Roman Empire. There are many other ancient structures with interesting stories, and each reinforce the charm of this historical yet modern resort town.

A beautifully-preserved history isn’t the only thing Mazarrón possesses, the town boasts many kilometers of sandy beaches with sparkling waters that have earned the coveted Blue Flag award. Its temperate climate and clean waters make it ideal for comfortable swimming, and various water activities such as windsurfing, sailing, and jet-skiing.

The municipality of Mazarrón takes pride in its clean environment, and peaceful atmosphere. Residents and visitors alike can stroll or cycle on open, quiet country roads. There are even a number of trails to explore, and coves along the coast to discover for those who enjoy a little adventure.

Mazarrón’s old town, situated 6 kilometers from the coast, is the municipality’s center, and this is where one can find the Town Hall, an indoor market with fresh produce daily, service facilities, shops, restaurants, and cafes. The Town Hall organizes an array of activities and attractions each year, which includes scuba diving, sailing, hiking, and even street parties with live music during the summer evenings.

Mazarrón is a quiet and peaceful place with all the comforts and convenience of modern living —an ideal haven for people needing to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, or for those wanting a more serene place to live.
