The area around Torrevieja, in the Southern Costa Blanca, is arguably one of the top locations for golfing in Spain. There is a truly comprehensive selection of scenic, challenging and fun golf courses that cater for a range of handicaps. In the past two decades, the growing popularity of the climate, geography and flora of the southern Alicante province has led to the development of several high-quality courses with many located within 30-minutes’ drive from the city of Torrevieja. For many years golf in Costa Blanca meant playing at the renowned courses of Campoamor, Las Ramblas, and Villamartin, however, the more recent courses bring their own unique and fun golfing experiences with a variety of challenges and scenic backdrops.

1. VISTABELLA GOLF

Vistabella Golf, with its large lake, strategic bunkers, tricky greens and undulating fairways, is a challenging course, but also one of the most attractive and unique courses in the area. Many greens are undulating and challenging but they are in excellent condition and run true. The slopes are steep, but the views are picturesque. Players will enjoy the course from start to finish.

Friendly staff, excellent course condition, and delicious meals. Highly recommended.

Tough course, but all levels of handicappers will enjoy it.

2. LAS COLINAS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

A scenic ‘American style’ golf course, with an impressive mountain backdrop and many lakes on the sides of fairways and greens to collect errant balls. There is plenty of indigenous wildlife in the desert washes that separate the greens. The staff is friendly and helpful.

A buggy is recommended (or an individual scooter – highly recommended) due to the undulation and large distances from greens to the next tees.

This is a challenging but fun course with quick greens and unique holes. Free range balls before your round.

One of the more expensive campos in the area but highly enjoyable and a must play at least once.

3. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF COURSE

The large and generous greens of Las Ramblas are located on a steep terrain surrounded by water. The vegetation comprises of leafy Mediterranean pines that form a spectacular backdrop. It’s a hilly course that wraps around the natural rugged terrain, leading to many elevation drops from tee to green and dog-leg holes with blind tee shots. The first 9 holes are challenging but very scenic, while the back 9 holes are more ‘straightforward’ though longer. The Hollywood movie Taken 3, with lead actor Liam Neeson, was filmed here.

This is a challenging course suitable for low – mid handicappers. Highly recommended for the unique golfing experience it offers. This is a must play, at least once.

4. CAMPO DE GOLF VILLAMARTIN

Villamartin is a benchmark in the Valencian community and one of the most established courses in the region that was designed by renowned California-based architect Robert Dean Puttman in 1972. This mature course has various types of vegetation and spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. The international-quality greens are not too small and each hole, routed on undulating, natural terrain, is completely different. This golf course was host to the Mediterranean Open in 1994 and a qualifying of the European circuit in 1997. Check current reviews for course conditions and round time as these have raised concerns with recent players.

5. LA MARQUESA GOLF 

This scenic course, where golfers of all levels can play, is located in a flat valley just North of Torrevieja. Lakes and streams border the pine and palm-tree-lined course, which will test your skills. There is a good variety between short and long holes. The course is mostly flat for the front 9 with some variation for the last 9 holes. Friendly helpful staff and excellent facilities. Highly recommended and really enjoyable.

6. LA FINCA RESORT

La Finca is known for its beautiful course with some challenging holes. There are quite a few lakes so that adds an extra level of difficulty to the game. The course itself is very nature friendly and home to various migratory birds such as egrets and ducks. There is an impressive variety of greens and generous fairways. Each hole is quite unique and interesting. This is a stunning location with its own popular hotel. Highly recommended. Lovely hotel.

7. REAL CLUB DE GOLF CAMPOAMOR

The 18 holes of this golf course run through two interconnected valleys, engulfed by gentle, low undulating ridges. It’s a fair course, so you don’t have to be a low handicapper to enjoy your game and accumulate all 36 stableford points. The natural terrain surrounding Real Club de Golf Campoamor protects the course from strong winds which makes it an enjoyable course to play outside of summer.

9. HACIENDA RIQUELME GOLF

The Hacienda Riquelme Golf Course offers fairways running between lakes, rich wildflowers, and olive groves. Some of the greens have numerous contours, so course knowledge is important and a good approach iron shot can easily make the difference between a 3 putt and an easy 2 putt. The undulating contours of fairways and the tricky greens make for a challenging round of golf.

Course in fine condition and the staff are friendly and helpful. Very warm in Summer (it’s a quite a bit further from the sea than many of the other courses mentioned here) so perhaps some of the other breezier coastal courses would be better in the hotter months. Highly recommended outside of July and August.

10. LA SERENA GOLF

A scenic golf course located parallel to the sea in Mar Menor. The course provides the challenge of 16 lakes with the combination of the Levante winds so it will reward strategic play – laying up is never a bad option. This is a challenging but fair and enjoyable course for all levels of golfers. The good value makes it all the more enticing, and the cooling sea breeze helps in the summer months.
