1.  Where is Torrevieja in Spain?

Torrevieja is a coastal city and municipality located on the Southern Costa Blanca, in the province of Alicante, situated on the southeastern Mediterranean coast of Spain. It can be found about 50 kilometres south of the city of Alicante. 


2.  What is the place like?

Torrevieja boasts of a wide range of beaches, two large natural salt lakes, natural parks and reserves, and many modern attractions and facilities. The town offers a laidback lifestyle which many find appealing. Torrevieja enables its residents and visitors to experience a healthy lifestyle in touch with nature, while still being able to enjoy the comfort and excitement of modernity. 
 

3 How big is the city of Torrevieja?

Torrevieja has an area of 71.44 km², with a population of 82,599 as of 2018, according to the Instituto Nacional de Estadística. It is the third-largest city in the province of Alicante in terms of population, and the fourth largest city in terms of area. 
 

4.    What does 'Torrevieja' mean?

The city’s name can be traced back to as far as the late 1700s, when the area existed only as an ancient guard tower, along with some labourers’ cottages. Torre Vieja in Spanish means “Old Tower”, and was aptly applied as the town’s name. 
 

5.    How far is Torrevieja from Benidorm?

Benidorm is another city on the Costa Blanca popular among tourists and expats alike. While not as large as Torrevieja, the city is known as a busy seaside metropolis. Benidorm is approximately 115 kilometres away from Torrevieja and can be accessed via the AP-7 highway. Travel time is around 1 hour and 16 minutes. 
 

6.    How far is Torrevieja from Alicante International Airport?

Alicante International Airport (ALC), also known as the Alicante-Elche Airport, is the fifth busiest airport in all of Spain, with a wide range of domestic and international flights. Distance from the airport to Torrevieja is 44.7 kilometres, and travel time is around 38 minutes by car.
It should be noted that you also have the option of flying in and out from Murcia Corvera International Airport.


7.    How to get to Torrevieja from Alicante International Airport?

There are three ways to get to Torrevieja from the Alicante-Elche Airport: by car rental service, taxi cab, or bus. Car rental companies can be found in the airport itself or booked in advance online. There are taxi cabs available at the airport as well. By car or taxi, travel time is only around 38 minutes. You may also take the Costa Azul Bus, which is cheaper but would take around 1 hour to reach Torrevieja. 
 

8.    What is the weather or climate like in Torrevieja?

Like the rest of Costa Blanca, Torrevieja boasts of a warm but pleasant, temperate climate that lasts nearly all year. Torrevieja, however, has a unique microclimate thanks to its two large, natural salt lakes. These are responsible for the city’s healthy air—earning it the title of one of the healthiest places to live in the world, as voted upon by the World Health Organization. 
 

9.    What towns and cities are near Torrevieja?

Los Montesinos, San Miguel de Salinas, Guardamar del Segura, Rojales, Pilar de la Horadada, San Javier, Elche, and Orihuela are towns found in very close proximity to Torrevieja. Also, heading South, the coastal village of Punta Prima, and Orihuela Costa's coastal developments: Playa Flamenca, Cabo RoigLa Zenia, Campoamor, Mil Palmeras and Torre de la Horadada
 

10.    What are things to do in Torrevieja?

11.    Is the place cold during the winter months? 

Although warm and sunny most of the year, Torrevieja’s temperatures experience a drop during December – February. During this time, the city still has a very pleasant average temperature of 17°C.


12.    What are the best beaches in Torrevieja? 

•    La Mata Beach – Torrevieja’s longest beach, with a surrounding natural park

•    Playa de Los Locos – Perfect for individuals with limited mobility

•    Playa del Cura – The city’s most popular beach, with a promenade offering great views


13.    Why is the lake in Torrevieja pink? 

Laguna Rosa de Torrevieja or Torrevieja’s Pink Lake is widely known for its pigmented pink hue, but what makes the salt lake so pink? The answer lies in the Halobacterium—a type of bacteria which thrives in extremely salty environments—found in the lake, as well as a type of algae called Dunaliella Salina, which is responsible for the reddish hue. These two create the lovely pinkish-purple colour for which the lake is popular.


14.    Is the city safe to travel and live in? 

Torrevieja has its share of petty theft and burglary. Local authorities are very active in preventing these, as well as assisting locals and visitors alike. There are two police stations, and local law enforcement officers actively patrol public areas (such as bus stops, parks, and beaches) through the city. It is always best to exercise caution, but you will surely be able to enjoy the many sights and attractions of Torrevieja without having to constantly look around. Many residential areas even experience little to no crime due to the vigilance of the residents.

 

15.    Is Torrevieja a busy and crowded city? 

Although there are a few highly-urban areas that are busy—especially during the day—there are plenty of places in Torrevieja where one can still enjoy peace and quiet while appreciating nature.

 

16.    What to ride when touring and exploring the city?

•    Car Rental Service – To fully explore and see Torrevieja’s sights and attractions

•    Bicycles – You can rent bikes to cycle on the promenades and through the natural parks

•    Taxi Cabs – Many places in Torrevieja are best explored by foot, but taxi cabs are also available for accessing farther places

 

17.    Where is the bus station in Torrevieja?

Torrevieja has a bus station with routes to and from Alicante, Murcia, and Cartagena. The bus station is located at Calle del Mar, 40.

 

18.    Are apartments and rentals expensive in Torrevieja?

Because of the influx of international visitors and expats, the demand for residential properties, there has been a high increase in real estate developments and rental properties. Because of this, interested buyers or renters have a large selection to choose from, depending on their budget and preferences.
