22 years of the declaration of Tarraco World Heritage

Tarragona organizes various activities for all ages to learn about the history of the city

We are lucky to find ourselves on a strip of coast that, in addition to its notorious tourist attraction, has a rich, world-renowned cultural heritage, which extends throughout the area from its capital Tarragona.

Thus, on the Costa Dorada, first-rate remains of the Roman footprint on the Iberian Peninsula are preserved, dating from the 3rd century B.C. until VI AD, which we know as the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco. This was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2000.

In the capital, the most outstanding vestiges immediately stand out, such as the amphitheater (the most iconic construction in the city), the Roman theater and the forum. However, in other towns in the area there are also very relevant buildings from the period, such as the Centcelles mausoleum, the El Mèdol quarry and the town of Els Munts (Altafulla).

But of course, the historical importance of Tarragona does not end with the Roman archaeological remains, as it also preserves impressive buildings from the Middle Ages such as the wall, the cathedral, the cloister or the Paborde castle.

The Museu d'Història de Tarragona organizes visits, routes and activities related to various aspects of the city's past, which will undoubtedly be of interest and enjoyment to locals and strangers. Thus, both residents who want to spend a morning or afternoon entertaining with the family, as well as visitors or tourists who feel attracted to learn more about the history of the place where they are, all of them have a good opportunity for all of this.

In addition, the city of Tarragona has recently endowed itself with various institutions, entities and cultural facilities dedicated to showing, disseminating and/or promoting all kinds of contemporary, local or foreign art projects, thus becoming a city also committed to modern culture. The Museu d'Art Modern de Tarragona stands out, and the Center for Contemporary Arts of Tarragona, also called Mèdol; which organize a good number of cultural initiatives that we will comment on later.

Tarragona, city and province, is full of both beautiful places to visit and/or inhabit, as well as a diverse and interesting cultural offer for audiences of all ages and interests. enjoy it
