Culture

Benalup showcases a rich history, that dates back to prehistoric times, evidenced by its famous cave paintings and tombs found within the hill caves overlooking the Celemín and Barbate reservoirs - a perfect location for bird watching with griffon vultures, storks, cranes, egrets, and occasionally imperial eagles passing through on their migratory route to Africa. Moving forwards from the prehistoric times, Benalup has found itself in the centre of different historic periods with such as the Arab-Andausí period. The settlement is first mentioned in records as Casas Viejas in 1555. This was the name it would keep until the tragic events of January 1933, when the forces of law and order brutally put down an attempted revolutionary uprising. The incident caused such widespread condemnation throughout all of Spain that it played a major role in the fall of Manuel Azaña's cabinet during the Second Republic. After Benalup de Sidonia separated from Casas Viejas in 1991, the latter became just Benalup.
