On the eastern side of Santiago de Compostela, is the expansive area of San Marcos. Characterized by wide-ranging green fields and farm lands, the area boasts of rich greenery and an abundance of open space. San Marcos is the site of Monte do Gozo, or the Hill of Joy, which is a spacious hill known for being the last stop of Christian pilgrims following the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route before reaching the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela. The Monumento do Monte do Gozo stands at the top of the hill. The Auditorio Monte do Gozo is also situated here, and is a large outdoor concert venue which features an amphitheatre-like setting, with a stage, open area and rows of concrete benches. Behind the benches is a crescent-shaped body of water that adds to the venue’s tranquil ambiance.
