Praza Abastos (square of supplies – market square) is a small, elevated plaza in Santiago de Compostela’s Casco Histórico (historical centre). It is situated next to Praza de Mazarelos, a spacious and scenic plaza which is the site of the Arco de Mazarelos historical landmark—a huge arched opening in a medieval wall. Praza Abastos consists of numerous stucco houses and large old-fashioned apartment blocks with Romanesque-inspired architecture usually seen in buildings in the area.
It is mostly a residential area, with many of the stores, restaurants and other amenities located around the plaza, or in the neighboring Praza de Mazarelos. It is home, however, to a large old church and convent, the Convento das Mercedarias Descalzas, situated just across the wide set of steps leading up to the plaza. Many of the residents near this plaza are families, as well as students staying in apartments. This is because the University of Santiago de Compostela—a premier college in the city—is situated nearby. University students, faculty and families with children prefer to live in close proximity to the university, as well as to the array of amenities and services in and around the area.
Praza Abastos and its surrounding area is a central and convenient place to live, and the spacious cobblestone grounds, the many trees and local flora, and the minimal vehicles in the area mean that residents here can enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle in Santiago de Compostela’s charming old town.
