The legend that gave Monte Toro its name
The name of the mountain is linked to an ancient legend that goes as follows. "Toro" means "bull" and, according to folklore, refers to a bull that guarded the summit of the mountain in the 13th century. A few monks, supposedly the only visitors allowed access by the animal, saw a vision of the Virgin Mary there. In the 17th century, the "Sanctuary of the Virgin of Monte Toro" was built on the mountain, consisting of a monastery and a church with three chapels. In the sanctuary there is an interesting statue of the Virgin, now the patron saint of the island. According to another interpretation, the name "Monte Toro" does not come from the Spanish word "toro", but from the Arabic word "tor", which means "height".
Property owners in Menorca who are interested in historical culture can visit two further interesting sites on Monte Toro. One is an old defence tower, formerly used for military purposes and the second is a large statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, located near the sanctuary of the Virgin of Monte Toro.
