Avarcas are so ingrained on Menorca that quite possibly the locals are born with them already on their feet! Everyone from the island will have at least one pair, it's hard to imagine the island without them. The Menorcan footwear has also become very popular with visitors to the island because they are so traditional and typically Menorcan, they are practical and the unisex design is both comfortable and stylish, it might even be said that the older and more used they get the better they look (if you are dressing to impress keep a newer pair on hand). The history of Avarca sandals dates back to the 1920s, when a farmer named Joseph entered the shoe industry and produced the first Avarca sandals, he attached particular importance to them being robust and, above all, comfortable. He wanted to create a shoe that farmers could wear in the fields as well as in the city. Originally the sole was made from the rubber tread of a used tyre. In 1929 his two sons Antonio and José also joined his workshop and they started mass producing the shoe. In winter people stuffed the shoe with straw to keep themselves warmer.  

From the 1960s, the local population started to acquire a taste for the comfortable Avarca sandals, and demand increased significantly so other Menorcan shoemakers began to make them. Joseph's son Antonio inherited the workshop in 1965 and continued making Avarcas with his brother José. It was from the 1980s, that the Avarcas were also sold outside Menorca, and José travelled to Mallorca, Ibiza, Valencia and other regions in Spain to sell them. Over time, the sandals were improved more and more, becoming more comfortable and today a great pair of sandals that go with everything.
