La Festa des Vermar (winefair) takes place in Binissalem with the annual grape harvest festival. Each year the Town Hall organizes several grape and wine events. The most popular tradition is “The Grape Battle,” where hundreds of people throw grapes at one another, getting soaked in grape juice, and transforming the crowdinto a purple hue. There is also the Correfoc, which involves dozens of performers disguised as devils parading through the streets, setting off fireworks and performing fire dances. The festivities also include a grape-crushing event, wine tasting competitions and traditional parades with a variety of historical floats featuring folk music and dancing.
The entire region of Binissalem and its surroundings, has become renowned for its vineyards and has even received international recognition with the label Denominación de Origen Binissalem. Abbreviated to D.O., it’s a prestigious classification which is awarded to products such as wines, cheeses, sausages and hams that are produced in designated Spanish regions according to a stringent production criteria.
