Christmas is a fabulous time of the year to spend in Mallorca, you can rent a beautiful property from us at a great price and it is the ideal season to explore the north of the island and to house hunt.
There is plenty to do: Christmas markets, music concerts and theatre performances, with restaurants offering seasonal food in intimate candlelit interiors.
For the more energetic among us, hikers, bikers, golfers and climbers, this is the season to be jolly! With mild temperatures and blue skies almost every day, it is the perfect time of the year to indulge in a little winter sport and even a “San Silvestre” fun run in Alcudia old town on New Year’s Eve - don’t forget to wear your Santa hat!
Pollensa and especially Alcudia old town offer a comprehensive winter program of events for all to enjoy including several splendid classical concerts and religious masses. The most relevant is on December 24, nearly all the churches on Mallorca hold the "Matines", the Christmas Eve service to commemorate the birth of Jesus. The chant of the Sibil·la, with ancient origins is one of the most emotional moments of this religious celebration. It was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on November 16, 2010.
Here in the north, you will have the opportunity to enjoy this "special occasion" in the towns of Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia. It is worth seeing, don´t miss it!
A wander through the streets of Pollensa or Alcudia village in December, conjures up a feeling of nostalgia; the understated Christmas lights dotted around town, the smell of wood smoke of an evening, the occasional bauble or nativity scene in a shop window. It is, in fact, a deeply religious time in Mallorca and all of Spain, with the traditional nativity scene being the most popular Christmas decoration in the family home. The importance of the family unit is all the more significant at this time of the year and Christmas Eve and Christmas day are the main events with an elaborate dinner and lunch.
Santa tends to take a back seat here and although he may leave young children a token gift, it is the Three Kings Day on 6th January that is the most important day here for children.
Last but not least, a slightly less religious tradition but just as important is that of the 22nd December, where families all over the island and throughout Spain gather around their television sets for the results of the Christmas lottery “El Gordo” (the big one). Traditional paper tickets are sold during the months running up to Christmas, and the draw lasts for several hours with thousands of numbers being drawn, resulting in a large distribution of the winnings.
Make sure Mallorca is at the top of your Christmas list this year! …. and wishing you a festive holiday season!
