With over 300 sunshine days a year, Mallorca offers plenty of sun also during winter. Temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius in the summer and rarely drop below 10 degrees in the winter which makes it a brilliant off-season get-away. Bright blue skies and mild temperatures are common from November through to February, making Mallorca one of the warmest places in Spain. How can you resist a beach day in December or a New Year’s swim in the sea? Or to a cool drink on the terrace of your own property with a view of the sea, while your friends back home have sub-zero temperatures?
Mallorca's mild winter climate invites you to practice a variety of outdoor activities. Take advantage of the quieter months by honing your golf swing
at one of the many golf courses across the island: Arabella Golf Son Vida on the outskirts of Palma or further north in Alcanada, Alcudia Bay. Here you will also find a diverse selection of attractive properties to buy that directly border the greens and promise grandiose views of the spectacular landscape.
If you want to chase the summer, you will be pleased to hear that beach and water activities continue year-round. Sail around the island and breathe in the sea air and stunning views of the coastline along the bay of Pollensa in the north of the island. If you prefer to stay closer to the shore you might want to try stand up paddling or kayaking at Santa Ponsa or Portals Nous in Mallorca’s southwest. Here you will find fantastic luxury properties for sale, because the southwest of Mallorca stands for style and exclusivity. Spacious villas with swimming pools and Mediterranean-style gardens make the area from Portals to Port Andratx an ideal place for your permanent residence.
Hiking and cycling are in particular popular during the cooler months and there are a wide range of trails across the Tramuntana Mountains, from the picturesque town of Sóller in the west with its sandstone houses and orange groves, to Artà in the far northeast with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. Another favourite route is in the mountains that surround the traditional town of Alaró in central Mallorca. Climb Puig de Alaró where you will find a fantastically rustic restaurant, Es Verger Alaro, which is famous for its traditional Mallorcan cuisine, particularly its slow-roasted lamb in a wood fired-oven. Mallorca offers something for everyone, in each season of the year!
Palma de Mallorca, the island’s capital city, is the cultural hotspot of the island. Cosmopolitan and elegant, Palma has a thriving art scene with many galleries that exhibit the works of local and internationally-revered artists. Visit Es Baluard in the neighborhood of Sant Pere, which dates back to the Islamic era, where you can wander the largest cultural space in the Balearic Islands. Being an architectural fusion of simple modern lines and archeological walls and subterranean passages, the museum has a well-curated programme of contemporary art exhibitions and presentations. What is more, there is an excellent restaurant and lounge area with sublime views of the harbour, the cathedral and Palma Bay.
Other recommended galleries and historic buildings are Casal Solleric on Passeig del Borne in central Palma, an 18th century Baroque home with courtyards and a modern art gallery. On Calle San Miguel, the Museu Fundación Juan March has an impressive collection of works by world-famous artists including Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, all displayed in a grand setting.
Twice a year, in February and December, the magnificent Gothic cathedral, La Seu, has a light show when the morning sun shines through the stained glass of the Rose Window - the largest Gothic window in the world - creating a vividly colourful reflection.
The peaceful winter months are the ideal time to visit Mallorca’s countryside, especially the wine country. Santa Maria del Camí and Binissalem are known as the heart of the wine region and there are plenty of wineries that produce first-class wines using local varieties of grapes. Try a wine-tasting tour to sample some of the rich reds and crisp whites along with creamy local cheeses. Our favourites are: Macià Batle in the pretty village of Santa Maria and Tianna Negre, José Luis Ferrer and Biniagual in Binissalem where you can raise a toast to the festive season!
