Year-round sunshine and fruitful terrain make the Mediterranean island of Mallorca a wine lover’s dream. With an abundance of wineries and vineyards, with trailing cascades of grapes, local Mallorquin wine-making is rising in popularity both on the island and abroad.
The traditional village Santa Maria del Camí is centrally located and offers beautiful views of the Tramuntana mountains. Authentic and charming, it is a desirable residential area due to its rural setting, the weekly market and the proximity to the island’s capital Palmal. Considered the heart of the wine country, Santa Maria is the proud home of the well-known winery Macià Batle, which was established in 1856. Now a thriving bodega that produces modern wine with carefully-selected grapes from local vines, Macià Batle has received over 300 international awards. Why not sample a rich red or crisp white wine on one of the wine-tasting tours?
A ten-minute drive into the centre of the island you will find Binissalem, arguably the heart of Mallorca’s wine country. Grapes have been grown and harvested here since Roman times. The popular bodega Tianna Negre is a prime attraction in this charming town which is also an alluring place to live. Its most famous first wine, Ses Nines, is an island favourite, with an elegant and rich bouquet, that is produced with love from the native grape Manto Negro. Once a family business, which originated from a small vineyard in near Consell, the business has flourished and now also produces excellent olive oil.
The wineries José Luis Ferrer and Biniagual are also located in Binissalem. Established 85 years ago, Bodega José Luis Ferrer is a renowned bodega which has perfected its winemaking techniques over the past four generations. The winery itself has four main sections that comprise concrete tanks and barrels from 1931, a wine cellar and a more modern winery called Veritas. Offering wine-tasting and tours, the winery well serves the growing thirst for wine tourism.
Like the wines, the real estate on offer in Binissalem is varied and attractive. Should you choose to live in the centre of this small, pretty town, you could find yourself enjoying a traditional townhouse and an authentic slice of Mallorquin life. On the outskirts, the countryside stretches out in all directions, towards the beautiful Tramuntana mountains. Engel & Völkers Mallorca will be happy to support you in making your dream of a finca with its own vineyard come true soon!
