The oldest area in the city Ciudad Vieja (old city) is a small and compact historic district with well preserved medieval cobbled streets and located on a part of the Coruña peninsula that meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The lifestyle that the old city offers is a fusion of charming history and present-day conveniences, where the major services like the schools, hospitals, supermarkets, and restaurants are found in the neighbourhood. The respectfully-preserved historical structures complement the relaxed coastal living, with dreamy Galician sunsets, seaside promenades, sparkling blue waters, fresh Oceanic breeze, and laid-back seafront parks.
The old city has well-preserved mansions and noble residences and seats several churches like Santa María do Campo, with a Romanesque facade, 12th-century Church of Santiago, as well as 15th-century Santa Barbara convent. In the medieval old town is the Plaza de María Pita (Maria Pita Square), a centre point of the city where the Town Hall is located, and the Estatua de María Pita (Maria Pita Statue), a 16th-century statue of the Galician heroine who defended the town against the English Armada. These churches make the old city a point of interest among the art and history enthusiasts.
The locals and tourists alike will be fascinated to learn about the history of the Galician people’s struggles and triumphs displayed in Museo Histórico Militar da Coruña, Museo Arqueolóxico e Histórico (Military Historical Museum of A Coruña, Archaeological and Historical Museum), and Castelo de Santo Antón (The Castle of San Antón), which was built on a small rocky island which served as a strategic defensive stronghold of the port of Coruña.
The residents of the old city are fortunate to have access to well-maintained marinas, recreational centres, modern sporting facilities, watersports, as well as educational museums. The marina accommodates fishing boats, sporting boats, yachts, and even Cruise Ships.
The Metropolitan Sport and Spa is a huge fitness centre with modern gym amenities. It has an Olympic-size lap pool, 2 smaller pools, a shallow kiddie pool, and a relaxing pool with therapeutic water jets. For the residents looking to engage in sports activities and participate in the club’s friendly matches, there are basketball courts, paddle courts, and tennis courts.
Many of the homes are characterized by glass window balconies, called galerías (galleries). This unique port-city architectural design allows a sunny and bright interior with full access view of the marina, the relaxing seafront, and the calm seas.
Homes with outdoor balconies are also common, and these open-air spaces are used as a cosy lounging area, outdoor dining, barbeque area, or just an intimate sitting area to enjoy the Atlantic breeze on warm evenings.
Weekend dining recommended options are - Momos in Praza Santo Domingo, A Boca do Lobo in Calle de Tinajas, El Sauce in Rúa Sinagoga, and Adega Os Arcos in Rúa Repeso. For the nightlife options with friends, visit La Gata in Plaza Xeneral Azcárraga, Moreta in Rúa de Zapatería, and Bar Ciudad in Travesía Zapatería.
