Padel skilfully combines the qualities of the sports squash and tennis and is enjoying increasing popularity for good reason. Padel is already widespread throughout Spain and in large parts of South America, and the sport is also very much in vogue on Ibiza among locals and visitors alike. In Northern Europe, too, enthusiasm for padel is growing, although its spread here has only just begun. After buying a Mediterranean house or a beautiful flat on the charming Spanish island, you can visit one of the many sports clubs in the area and do something for your fitness with a round of padel. In this article by real estate agency Engel & Völkers Ibiza, you can learn more about the new trendy sport, which has similarities to tennis and squash, and get a little taste of two of the exclusive villas from our current property portfolio that are waiting for the right buyer. Read on!
The comparatively young sport originated in Acapulco (Mexico) in 1965, when multi-millionaire Don Enrique Corcuera was unable to build a classic tennis court - as originally planned - due to the nature of his estate. Due to a lack of space, only a half-sized court could be built, which was bordered by concrete walls that became part of the game. The Spanish Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, who got to know and love padel during a visit to Mexico by Don Enrique Corcuera, made the sport known in Spain in 1974 and laid the foundation for its spread. Padel is a successful mixture of tennis and squash, requires tactical thinking, has basic rules that are relatively easy to learn and appeals to both adults and children who are looking for a little more "action".

Due to the simplified rules, padel can be learned by all age groups, which has also contributed to its appeal. In 2024, padel will even become an Olympic sport discipline.
