Cerdanya is a true mine for nature and wild landscape lovers. One of the most striking landscapes is that of the Badlands in Olopte, a geological formation whose etymology ("bad lands") does not do justice to its unique beauty. Known in the area as Esterregalls or Guilleteres, the Badlands are located next to the small towns of All and Olopte, constituting one more tourism incentive in the municipality of Isòvol.
Geological and historical origins of the Badlands
The Esterregalls are a strongly eroded area by the action of wind and water over millions of years. It is one of the few landscapes of this type that can be found in the entire Pyrenees and, to its geological peculiarities, other explanations are added halfway between myth and history. This would be the case, for example, of the tradition that the Romans exploited a gold mine in this area.
An exciting family trip
In recent years, the Isòvol City Council has opted to improve accessibility to the Badlands, opening a large car parking that allows any family to approach comfortably in their private vehicle. Safe paths and steps have also been set up for all audiences, allowing the little ones to get close to the geological formations without danger.
In parallel with the above, visitors can learn more about the origins of the place, as well as historical and scenic curiosities related to the Badlands, thanks to the explanatory panels that are found on the trails. And as the finishing touch to any day, nothing better than to contemplate the impressive views of the valley that gives its name to the region, La Tosa de Alp and the Sierra del Cadí. In short, a family hiking day ideal to discover the charms of natural tourism in Cerdanya.
