Cerdanya is a unique region. It is an exceptional territory that offers, to visitors and those who live, unique conditions that make this region a close and authentic paradise.
To begin, let’s talk about its orographic characteristics, since it is one of the few Pyrenean valleys with an east-west orientation, when most mountain valleys are north-south. This makes its insolation one of the most important in Europe. Meaning more hours of sunshine than other surrounding areas. This is the reason why, for many years now, different projects have started to take advantage of solar energy.
Cerdanya, vast and generous — we are talking about more than 1,000 square kilometers —watered by the Segre River and its branches. The plain is a rich, fertile and productive land, where agriculture and livestock have had a relevant position. A 1,200 meters high valley, surrounded by 3,000 meter high peaks.
Gastronomy, mountains, nature, sports, culture and heritage, among others, are some of the possibilities to enjoy in Cerdanya. Thus, the logical growth in the services sector in recent years and the powerful, professional Real Estate sector developed around it, which offers a wide portfolio of possibilities in the housing market. Cerdanya has it all.
In addition, this territory is close to Barcelona —less than two hours— and Gerona —less than two and a half hours— Following in this text we review its main merits.
All year round Cerdanya presents a permanent scenic beauty. It is crowned by peaks such as La Tosa (2,535 meters), the Carlit behind it (2,900 meters) and the Puigpedrós at the western end (2,921 meters). The spectacular views of this territory from natural viewpoints such as Guils de Cerdanya or Lles, with the Cadí Mountain Range wall as a unique icon.
It is thanks to this environment, this valley and the mountains that surround it, that the love for mountaineering and outdoor sports, in capital letters and in all its expressions, is very present.
These are some of the options that can be practiced in Cerdanya: running, hiking, mountain biking (there are numerous marked trails and rural paths), paragliding, road biking (with secondary roads that allow flat journeys of more than 150 kilometers or ports of more than 2,000 meters, for the most prepared), climbing, snowshoeing, golf (there are up to three first-rate golf courses) and skiing, among others. For skiing, it is difficult to find a territory in the entire country that concentrates up to thirteen ski resorts, alpine and Nordic. It is true that four of these are in the Capcir region, but they are less than 45 minutes away by car from Puigcerdà, for example. Snow dominates the heights and skiing is present in most of Cerdanya’s homes.
In addition, it should be noted that Cerdanya has many sports facilities, such as the Puigcerdà Sports Center, where you can practice ice skating, curling and ice hockey, talking about winter sports, or basketball, football, tennis and paddle tennis.
And when you need to disconnect, rest and calm, Cerdanya is ideal
For example, there are different thermal water facilities in the surrondings, such as Dorres, Llívia, Llo, the Banys de Sant Vicenç or Termas la Collada. Centers, some of them, also prepared to give massages and other treatments. They are natural outdoor hot springs, in some cases. An indescribable pleasure to relax in sulphurous waters, over 30 degrees in temperature, surrounded by peace and nature.
Speaking of pleasures, cuisine is essential
Cerdanya is a gastronomic power. Renowned chefs have settled here for years. There is no town or village without a reference restaurant. Places like Bellver de Cerdanya, Das, Ger, Bolvir, Meranges, Guils de Cerdanya, Lles, Urús, Prullans, Alp, Martinet, Riu, Prats i Sansor or Puigcerdà, all have good cuisine. But in this list, Llívia acts with leadership. In this small town, more than a dozen first-line restaurants are concentrated, some of them with awards and recognitions from the state gastronomic sector. And talking about bakeries, renowned for the quality of their breads and cakes, from Martinet to Bellver de Cerdanya, Alp, Puigcerdà or Llívia. Oh! And pastry shops! How, if not, the “Gold Bean of the Pyrenees” has been, for consecutive years, for an establishment in Llívia, Cerdanya.
In this well-deserved culinary recognition, the quality products have helped a lot
Cerdanya currently has a wide range of local products ranging from honey to flour, yoghurts, cheeses, ice creams, sausages, foal, veal and lamb meat, vegetables, turnips, beer, potatoes, eggs, mountain liqueurs, jams and fruit, among others. And in this, among others, we must include wine, high altitude wine. Different experimental wineries have already been operating for a few years in the region. In Montellà, Bolvir, Meranges and Llívia, to name a few. And some, with recent awards that show that the vineyards in Cerdanya are here to stay. The success of these initiatives, without a doubt, is in the strength of its entrepreneurs.
Perhaps, all the elements highlighted in the text have not yet captured your interest, because the reader of these lines also values the patrimonial legacy, culture, traditions and history. From Martinet to Llívia, from the west end to the east end of the Ceretan territory, the vestiges, the monuments, the nuclei, the populations illustrate the passage of civilizations through this valley. Well-preserved historical centers in Bellver de Cerdanya, Puigcerdà or Llívia, the Martinet bunkers, the archeological sites in Bolvir or Llívia —where the only Roman forum in the Pyrenees is located—, to name a few, the castle in Llívia, the Esterragalls in All (Isòvol )… it is a large and difficult list to make here, so to close this chapter we will highlight the many Romanesque churches in the area.
In addition, each town maintains its local traditions and festivals like the “Vella de l'Estany” festival, the transhumance, the “caramelles”, the fairs…. and, especially, the Cerdanya way of speaking.
Finally, in recent times, for about 50 years, the growth of cultural offer in Cerdanya is remarkable. Especially in summer and Christmas times. Music festivals in summer are well known, with proposals for jazz, classical, pop, country and others that go from Puigcerdà to Bolvir, Alp, Bellver de Cerdanya or Llívia, among others. Magic festivals, puppet festivals, circus festivals, the Cerdanya Film Festival... Cultural proposals, such as seminars and conferences, the Ramon Llull Summer University in Puigcerdà, guided tours or theater, among others. And well-designed and complete cultural facilities such as Puigcerdà’s library or the Ceretan Museum in Puigcerdà or such as Llívia, with one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe.
These are the real values that Cerdanya offers currently. And the list is not complete since it becomes difficult to accommodate more aspects to highlight in a limited text space. However, we all agree that Cerdanya is a paradise. A nearby paradise, close to your home.
