Murten licence area - Facts & Figures

The small medieval town of Murten on the south-eastern shore of the lake of the same name has retained its original appearance with its picturesque old town streets and cosy arcades. The town has a beautiful lakeside promenade with a wide range of water sports and offers plenty of cultural and excursion opportunities.

Murten is located in the bilingual region of Switzerland, where both French and German are spoken. The official languages of the town are German and French, with German being the more common language.

A city wall protectively wraps around the small town. But for a long time now, the almost completely preserved, only accessible circular wall in Switzerland has no longer kept out intruders, but opens up a magnificent view of the old town roofs and the nearby lake to visitors. History buffs will find a rich collection on 6000 years of history of the town and region in the Murten Museum.

With 9371 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2021), Murten is one of the larger municipalities in the canton of Fribourg. Its population was 2645 in 1900. After that, it temporarily decreased, only to rise steadily since then. The highest growth rates were recorded between 1950 and 1970 and after the development of new residential zones in the 1990s. Today, Murten's settlement area has grown together with that of its neighbouring municipalities Meyriez and Muntelier without any gaps. A small part of Murten's commercial area belongs to the municipality of Courgevaux.
