The historic city centre of Freiburg's old town continues to fascinate today with its variety of beautiful new properties and time-honoured buildings time-honoured buildingssome of which date back to the Middle Ages. In many different historic town houses you can find exclusive Old buildings and luxury apartments which are now largely renovated and modernised. As one of the most popular locations for condominiums, you can sell your property in the city centre in cooperation with the market-experienced real estate agent Engel & Völkers Freiburg.
Wiehre is a very popular residential area today, mainly due to its rich stock of old buildings, the comparatively quiet streets and the attractive location between the city centre and green suburban areas. Due to the high rents and property prices alone, Wiehre is primarily a residential area for academics and the upper middle class. The development consists largely of villas, townhouses and large apartment blocks with spacious flats. Within Wiehre there are many small shops, often from the ecological-alternative sector, pubs and shops.
Most of the houses in Herdern were built during the Art Nouveau period. Villas with spacious plots were built on the slopes. This building activity continued in the 20th century with loose development in the northern part of Herdern. The south, east and west of the district are particularly popular today due to their tranquillity, high proportion of greenery and natural location.
oberau is located right in the heart of Freiburg and borders the old town to the west, Oberwiehre to the south and the Waldsee district to the east. The proximity to the city centre as well as to the open countryside with the forests of the Schlossberg and the meadows along the Dreisam make the district an ideal residential area within the city. The former industrial area of Oberau has developed into a residential neighbourhood with beautiful housing estates, old and new buildings, as well as detached houses.
All buildings in the Vauban district have been constructed to at least the Freiburg low-energy standard. This means that the 100 or so houses in the solar housing estate generate more energy over the year than they consume. There are also several passive houses, including the first apartment block in Germany to be built using passive construction methods. The largest proportion of residents are families who have organised themselves into building groups and built their own homes at low cost and with a great deal of personal contribution. A third of all residents are under the age of 18, most of whom are children. This makes Vauban, along with the Rieselfeld district, one of the neighbourhoods in Freiburg with the most children.

Rieselfeld, a new and lively district of Freiburg, was designed for people of all ages who want to live in Freiburg. Several kindergartens, a primary school and a grammar school, shops, cafés and social facilities as well as the Glashaus with its library and neighbourhood meeting point make the district diverse and worth living in. The good infrastructure makes it possible to do almost all shopping locally. The tram takes you directly into the city centre. To the west, the beautiful nature reserve and the Mundenhof recreational area border directly on the Rieselfeld.
Zähringen, with a population of around 10,000, is located in the north of Herdern, at the foot of Zähringen Castle and is one of the oldest districts in Freiburg. Zähringen Castle probably dates back to the 11th century and is situated on a hill that was first settled by the Celts in the 5th century. This district has developed into a very nice residential area. The spacious shopping centre offers a wide range of shops and the adjoining large park provides plenty of space to stroll and linger. The high-rise complex behind it also offers a small park and plenty of shady spots, so that everyone from young to old feels at home here.
The Stühlinger neighbourhood is located to the west, directly adjacent to the old town. Around 18,000 residents live in Stühlinger, spread across the three districts of Stühlinger-Beurbarung, Stühlinger-Eschholz and Alt-Stühlinger. The population density in the Stühlinger district is above the Freiburg average. In the Alt-Stühlinger district, it is more than twice as high as the average for Freiburg as a whole. Stühlinger is well supplied with kindergarten places. There is also a primary/secondary/middle school and secondary schools as well as a large vocational school centre.
Littenweiler is a very popular district of Freiburg located in the south-east of the city. Littenweiler has a very good infrastructure. The public transport connections are perfect and all shops for daily needs as well as speciality shops are available. Littenweiler is also home to one of Freiburg's three recycling centres, where residents can dispose of all kinds of waste. For sports enthusiasts, there are sports grounds, a large swimming pool, cycle paths to the Dreisam and to Freiburg city centre in the immediate vicinity. Mountain bikers and skiers can let off steam in Kirchzarten, Oberried, St. Peter and St. Märgen, on the Notschrei or the Kandel.
The district of St. Georgen is a community association consisting of three villages, Uffhausen, Wendlingen and St. Georgen. This association was independent until March 1938 and has belonged to the city of Freiburg since then. The townscape of St. Georgen is characterised by detached houses from the period after the Second World War. Only the old town hall in Blumenstraße and a few buildings in the town centre are still historic. Due to the close connection to Freiburg and the Haid industrial estate, the business community in the old centre of St. Georgen has dwindled considerably. Today there is only a sub-centre in Blumenstraße.
