The lake is fed by underground springs and canals. An example is the Rio Freddo which has a single outlet in the Acqua Nera canal that flows into Lake Maggiore in the municipality of Brebbia, in Sabbie d'Oro. On the banks there are large reeds that alternate with a dense clearing. The conformation of the lake and the presence of private shores have contributed to keeping it clean; in fact, the Lake of Monate, today, is one of the few basins of glacial origin to be suitable for swimming. The lake is very popular with bathers on all its shores, especially in the beaches equipped with pedal boats and canoes for hire. Furthermore, navigation with motor boats is prohibited.
