Renovation: how to hire an architect who meets your expectations?

A few things to look out for

If you want to start a renovation project, you should undoubtedly hire an architect. However, architects differ from one another. The success of your project, according to your wants and needs, is largely determined by choosing the right person or architectural firm.

How do you find information on architects?

Once you know what style you want to realise your project in, seek advice from your acquaintances or your relatives in the first instance. They can inform you about their good and not so good past experiences with different architects. In magazines, newspapers and specialised books you will also find information about the specific characteristics of architectural firms and you will also find good or bad criticism of their way of working. The complete list of people registered with the Belgian Architects' Association can be found on the website www.architect.be. Based on various criteria (specialisation, region, language spoken, to which council they belong and so on), it is possible to look for the most suitable architect for your renovation project. Reviewing the portfolios of different architects also makes it easier to select the person who most closely meets your requirements. It is also possible to visit one of the houses that a particular architect has built or renovated.

Some other points to consider when choosing a suitable architect

It is very important that the architect you want to hire is familiar with the style in which you want your house built or renovated. It is obviously not a good idea to choose an architect who likes to work with clean, minimalist lines while you prefer a more rustic style. Even if some architects or architectural firms claim to have experience with different architectural styles, it is better to hire an expert in a particular field.

An architect's technical preference also varies greatly from person to person. Some are more attracted to new construction than renovations of old houses. Certain architects specialise in the use of ecological materials, others specialise in low-cost structures, while still others prefer to focus on houses that are almost energy-neutral.

Finally, one last factor to consider: the region in which the architectural firm is based and the region in which the architect works. It is obviously much easier to solve problems on site if your architect can be on site quickly and easily accessible.

Good cooperation: one of the keys to the success of your project

If your search for a suitable specialist is complete and you have set your sights on one or more architects, make an appointment to meet them soon. Be aware of the terms of such an appointment to avoid unpleasant surprises. Present your project to your favourite architect and listen to his point of view, but above all, try to listen to your instinct. Does it click with this architect? Does he give the impression of understanding you or does he merely want to follow his own idea without listening to you? A good and close collaboration with your architect is a guarantee for the successful completion of your project within the allowed budget, but also and above all for the realisation of your dream. It is therefore essential for the 'spark to fly'!

The contract

Once you have agreed with your architect what you expect from him, it is time to sign a contract that protects you from unforeseen circumstances and inconveniences. All the architect's duties should be listed, as well as the fee you will pay him in return for his services.
